For their hard-core under-18 fans, of course, the Backstreet Boys are all that, and a bag of chips and free soda to boot. Millennium, the follow-up to the quintet's umpteen-million-selling debut, offers more reasons why so many of the rest of us have found a place for them in our hearts. The Boys' ultrapackaged look and up-to-date production underscore the quality of their best tracks; only a churl could deny that "I Want It That Way" is one fine radio-aimed declaration of love, or that "Larger Than Life" makes the most of its Daft Punk sample and double-edged acknowledgment of Backstreet followers' loyalty. And who can resist an album-closer like "The Perfect Fan," Brian Littrell's ode to his mom? --Rickey Wright

Adolescence (Paperback) by Paul S. Kaplan

Product Description

By incorporating current research, historical information, and analysis, author Paul Kaplan presents multiple perspectives on the issues surrounding adolescence in order to give students a more complete picture of topics and debates. Based around five key themes—adolescence is a time of choices; it is shaped by context and influenced by group membership; the adolescent experience has changed over the last 50 years; and current views of adolescence are becoming more balanced—in-text discussion not only covers the problems and challenges adolescents face, but also the positive adjustments and coping mechanisms they use. Readers are encouraged to discuss these and other issues and consider their own opinions.

The text includes a number of pedagogical aids in order to better educate students, uphold the multiple perspective approach, and ensure that students evaluate their own views. What Is Your Opinion? surveys open each chapter and engage students' interest by challenging them to express preconceptions about the topic and Has Your Opinion Changed? features revisit these surveys and help students reevaluate their beliefs after they've learned more. In addition, Perspective boxes in each chapter present a situation an adolescent faces, such as dating an older person or experimenting with drugs, and his or her perspective; then the issue is stated from an alternative point of view. Students must then use material from the chapter, personal experience, or both to answer questions, analyze the situation, and state what they believe to be the best outcome.

An overall integrated learning system helps students focus on the key material in each chapter:

  • A Focus box in each chapter covers an applied issue or area of concern in depth, such as cults, gangs, the Self in different cultures, partner violence, and the question of parental notification for abortion.
  • The marginal glossary provides definitions of key terms at the point of use.
  • At-a-Glance charts provide visual summaries after each section, highlighting key topics and points. The major points of the chapter are summarized, with key terms, at the end of the chapter.
  • Placing... in Perspective presents each chapter's main area of study, such as self-concept and identity, in the broader context of adolescence so that readers understand how the chapter fits into the overall picture.
  • A Themes box at the end of every chapter summarizes material as it relates to the five key themes.
  • An appendix provides two levels of review questions for each chapter, one multiple choice, the other essay-type.

Journey into Islam: the Crisis of Globalization (Paperback) by Akbar Ahmed

From Publishers Weekly

In response to the events of September 11, 2001, Ahmed, Islamic studies professor at American University in Washington, D.C., set out last year to visit Muslim nations in the Middle East, South Asia and Far East Asia. Accompanied the entire way by two non-Islamic American students and occasionally by others—including one American student who was Islamic—the Pakistani-born professor hoped to improve his understanding of the contemporary Muslim realm in all its diversity. Not so incidentally, Ahmed also wanted to shatter the stereotype of the U.S. as a warmongering, Islam-hating nation. The result is a fascinating account of how he and his students braved danger to build mutual understanding in Pakistan, India, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Qatar, Malaysia and Indonesia. As academics, they administered detailed questionnaires to Muslims in each nation, while as social creatures, they sat through seminars, luncheons, dinners and casual conversations looking for a candid exchange of ideas about religious, political and cultural differences. Occasionally Ahmed lapses into academese, loses his humility or generalizes beyond what the evidence seems to support. But mostly he comes across as an honorable man who believes that the future of the human race depends on international dialogue between Muslims and non-Muslims. (June)

Standing in the Light: The Captive Diary of Catharine Carey Logan, Delaware Valley, Pennsylvania, 1763 (Dear America) by Mary Pope Osborne

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-Set in the Delaware Valley of Pennsylvania in 1763 and written in journal format, this book tells the story of Caty Logan, a Quaker girl who is upset by news of Indian raids on nearby farms. Although her father explains that these attacks are in retaliation for promises broken by the settlers and the English government, she is still frightened. While on their way to school several weeks later, Caty and her brother are captured by a group of Lenape. Although she fears that they will both be murdered, they are not harmed and are given to two members of the tribe who had lost children to measles, a disease brought by white traders. Through her friendship with Snow Hunter, a young man who had been captured nine years earlier, Caty gains an understanding of these people and their beliefs. She also begins to fall in love with him. Eventually, English soldiers rescue the girl and her brother. Caty's return to Quaker life is very difficult; she feels estranged from her mother and her old friends and yearns for Snow Hunter and her Indian family. Osborne successfully sustains readers' attention with a strong story line while informing them about American history. Through Caty's experiences, they will gain a clearer understanding of the Quaker religion and the beliefs of the Lenape. Complete with background information and illustrations depicting life during this era, this is a solid piece of historical fiction.

Gr. 3^-6. This offering in the Dear America series (see also White's Voyage on the Great Titanic, reviewed below) introduces Catharine Carey Logan, a 13-year-old Quaker girl living in rural Pennsylvania in 1763. When Caty and her younger brother, Thomas, are captured by a band of Lenape warriors, she fears the worst. For months she rails against her captors at every opportunity, despite their humane treatment of her. Then, her blossoming friendship with Snow Hunter, an English captive who has decided to remain with the tribe permanently, helps her see the good in this very different culture. Although she is eventually recaptured by the English, her newfound empathy for the Lenape lifestyle leaves her an alien in her own world. Osborne's strength is her portrayal of Caty's gradual realization that the Lenape are not savages but human beings with views as legitimate as her own. Appended with a historical note, period artwork, maps, and drawings, this will be popular with history buffs and classes studying Pennsylvania history. Kay Weisman

The Winter of Red Snow: The Revolutionary War Diary of Abigail Jane Stewart, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, 1777 (Dear America) by Kristiana Gregory

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8?The hardships of the Revolutionary Army at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78 have become symbolic of patriotism and perseverance. This novel recounts the experience through the eyes of 11-year-old Abby Stewart, whose family lives near the encampment. Abby's childlike yet perceptive diary records her varying emotions toward the soldiers?curiosity, pity, anger, revulsion, enthusiasm?as she observes and interacts with them. Although Gregory's overall tone is positive, she doesn't neglect the downside of army life (disease, desertion, thievery) or the horrors of war. Daily events?chores (especially cooking and laundry), amusements, trials, worries, family interactions?are smoothly woven into the story. The Winter of Red Snow gives readers an interesting and realistic look at the Revolutionary War. However, the quaint language ("I could speak not") is awkward. A two-page epilogue fills readers in on these fictional characters' fates, and a lengthy historical note provides documentation on life in 18th-century America.?Ann W. Moore, Guilderland Public Library, NY

Not on a White Horse (Paperback) by Nancy Springer

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8 Twelve-year-old Rhiannon confronts the age-old struggle between destiny and choice in this coming-of- age story. An elusive horse is the cata lyst for her busy summer of self-discov ery, causing a chain of events that makes her realize that she holds the power to alter her future. Her new friends, human and equine, help her to cope with family turmoil and the de pressing atmosphere of a Pennsylvania mining community. Springer has creat ed a strong central character, and read ers will enjoy the details of horsekeep ing and horsemanship, especially the nursing of a neglected horse. Unfortu nately, the heavy-handed theme com promises the book's appeal as a girl/ horse story. The horses serve as more than pleasant characters; they also act as symbols representing life's choices. Rhiannon's hard-drinking, laid-off fa ther acts as the theme's human spokes man. His dialogue seems inconsistent with his action, reducing his believabil ity. If readers can skim over his dia tribes and tolerate the frequent emo tional upheavals, they will enjoy Rhiannon's introduction to the world of horses.
